COVID Vaccine Update
Cathays Surgery is delighted to support the roll out of the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme providing Oxford/Astra Zeneca vaccines.
Our initial supplies will be very limited and we will contact our most vulnerable patients in line with the priority group guidance issued by the Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations as soon as we can.
At the moment we politely ask that you do not ring the Surgery to enquire about the vaccination in order to prevent congestion of our phone lines during this challenging time. Please be assured we will be in touch.

Notice: The Primary Care Mental Health Liaison service based within your GP practice is still working and ready to help GPs and their patients find solutions for mental health problems. We know that getting through on the phone can sometimes be difficult, so if you want us to book you an appointment for a call back from a mental health practitioner, then please email Cavmentalhealth.firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be happy to book you in.
You will be asked for your name, date of birth and address and preferred telephone number, as well as the name of your usual surgery and a brief account of the nature of your problem (e.g. anxiety) . We need this information from you to make sure that we can link in properly with your GP. This is a secure email address and any case notes will be entered into your usual GP case notes. Your email address will not be stored or used for any other purpose.
COVID -19 – CATHAYS SURGERY WEDNESDAY 18TH MARCH 2020
With effect from today there will be no routine appointments available to book with all clinical staff.
If you think that you need to be seen by a medical practitioner or nurse please call the surgery on 029 20353020. You will be placed on a telephone triage list and the clinician will call you back.
Please do not come to the surgery unless you have been triaged and invited to attend.
Repeat prescription requests can now be taken over the telephone, or posted through the STAFF ENTRANCE DOOR of the surgery along with sick notes or any other administrative requests.
We will send all prescription requests to our local pharmacies Crwys Pharmacy (Tel No: 02920 373631) and Woodville Pharmacy (Tel No: 02920 227835) so please state which of these pharmacies you would like us to send your prescription to.
**Please telephone the pharmacy to ensure your prescription is ready before collecting from the pharmacy**
All sick notes and university letters will be posted to your home (Cardiff) address.
All non-urgent appointments are cancelled until further notice.
Novel Coronavirus – Advice for Patients
The latest advice is to self-isolate for 7 days if you have a new continuous cough or high temperature (fever) or loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.
If you live with other people, the entire household should stay at home for 14 days from the day the first person gets symptoms.
If you are worried about symptoms of Coronavirus you should use the NHS Direct Wales online symptom checker at www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk/COVID19
You should only call 111 if the symptom checker advises you to.
Please do not attend your GP surgery, community pharmacy or A&E department if you have any symptoms of Novel Coronavirus to stop the spread of infection.
You can help stop the spread of Novel Coronavirus by ensuring you practise good hygiene. Cough and sneeze into a tissue, bin it and immediately wash your hands with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds.

My Health Online
PLEASE NOTE THAT DURING THE CURRENT COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) PANDEMIC WE ARE CURRENTLY UNABLE TO OFFER ONLINE APPOINTMENTS. PLEASE CALL THE SURGERY. MY HEALTH ONLINE CAN STILL BE USED FOR REPEAT PRESCRIPTION REQUESTS.
Did you know that you can use a mobile phone, tablet or computer to book or cancel an appointment with your GP, or request a repeat prescription? All you need to do is sign up to use My Health Online services.
Just like online banking you can sign up for a range of online services from your GP. Although these will vary from practice to practice and will depend on what your practice is offering.
Advantages of online services include:
- No hanging on the phone, waiting to get through to the GP surgery
- Convenient access to GP services from home or work — or anywhere with internet access
- Reduced administration for the GP practice
How do I get it?
You need to call into your GP practice or print off the document here to sign up. You will then need to drop the completed form into the surgery (Cathays Terrace). Your GP will issue you with a registration letter, you will need to have proof of identity on you to enable them to do this.
NEW SERVICE: Think Physio
The new service called “Think Physio” is now live and is for any patients are who are suffering from the following problems:
- Soft tissue injuries
- Joint pain
- Ligament or muscle injury
- Spinal pain
This service will provide availability of appointments with a physiotherapist within either Cathays Surgery or within a local partnered practice.
If you have any of the above listed issues then you may be offered an appointment with this service instead of with a GP. This is to help reduce patient waiting times and to provide a more specialist service for the listed ailments.
Do you need to see the doctor today? You can now get FREE NHS ADVICE and FREE TREATMENT for a range of common ailments from our local community pharmacists without having to make an appointment with a GP.
The introduction of this service will increase the NHS appointments available to our patients. Local pharmacies providing this service are listed below:
- Woodville Pharmacy (Woodville Road) are now offering the Choose Pharmacy service Monday – Friday.
- Crwys Pharmacy (Crwys Road) are now offering the Choose Pharmacy service Monday – Saturday.

Access & Facilities
A front door bell at wheelchair height is available to call for assistance with the main entrance doors. Once in the building, wheelchair users will gain access to all services with comparative ease.
Patients with mobility and breathing difficulties can arrange to be seen downstairs.
We are continuously reviewing our appointment system, patients should refer to the practice website for the most up to date information regarding the booking of appointments.
